Homework for the weekend. Happy April fools day!

You are lucky you aren't in school for that...

For the weekend, read pages 791-805. Pay special attention to how the revolution and aftermath in France compares to the revolutions and aftermath in Haiti and the Bolivarian revolutions in Latin America.

Then, if you are in the mood to watch something that will bend your brain, check out the TED talk linked up here. The title of it is Questions No One Knows the Answers To. It is only 12 minutes long and it actually doesn't have anything to do with history....it just makes you think about what you don't know, which is good every now and again...

March 29th assignment

For tonight, you are to watch the TED talk given by Niall Ferguson on the 6 killer apps.

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/niall_ferguson_the_6_killer_apps_of_prosperity.html

Then write your own response on your blog to what he has to say. Do you agree? Disagree? have an alternative? You could tweet it to him too at @nfergus if you like...see if he replies!

Homework for March 28--PTTS Post Traumatic Test Syndrome

For tonight, read pages 781-790 in the textbook. However, you should only skim the section on the American Revolution, or, if you feel like you know that event well enough, you can skip it entirely...

Homework for March 23--the freakin' weekend!

For this weekend, go back to the beginning of this unit, pages 594-595 (carefully not paginated...)
and read the essay there that ties this all together. Compose a blog post in which you thoughtfully discuss two things.
1) Why did the textbook authors choose to put the Ottomans, Safavids and Mughals together in chapter 28? Was this a good decision or a bad decision?
2) overall, was this period of global interactions a good thing or a bad thing? Why do you think so?

Posterous posts are due by 11:59 pm on Tuesday.

Test is on Wednesday.

Monday will be for review in the style of the Amazing Race. Wear your running shoes! (Seriously, you'll need to be moving around the building, so no painful, strappy numbers...)

Homework for March 22

By tomorrow, everyone should have read the rest of the chapter on the Muslim Dynasties.

We will have a test on Wednesday of next week (March 28). It will cover the readings we've done (see past blog posts!! selections from chapters 23-28) and material we've covered in class. It will consist of 70 Multiple Choice questions. This one won't be easy, so start studying now! Lots of information, lots of choppy sections, and lots of class notes. You'll be overwhelmed if you wait to study. Better to be whelmed, and just start now...

The Posterous Post for this unit will also be due by Tuesday, March 27th at midnight. It is a little different than ones we've done before, so be certain to read the new post on the class forum in Posterous! So don't delay, do it today!

Homework for March 13

Tonight read pages 738-741, and you should stop at Japan. Then take a look at a selection from the first chapter of Dream of the Red Chamber linked up here. You can download it in multiple formats, or you can just read it on the web. The actual story starts on the 4th page--skip the author's ramblings at first.

Coming up after we're done with Japan, we'll look at the Islamic Empires (chapter 28) and then be done with this unit. Which means another test is on the horizon--likely 2 weeks away, and we will have a posterous posting to do as well...and another essay! Gosh, I can hear you all clapping from here...

What to do in class Friday, March 9

Hi folks-
I'm home with a sick child, so you should do the following in class:

1) Take the quiz!

2) Your task is to make a presentation that covers the important material in chapter 26. You may work in groups of up to 4 to do this. You may use VoiceThread, Educreations or ShowMe or another app to do so, but your end product must be shared via your blogs!

You should focus your presentation on one of the following topics (so mix it up with different groups taking different topics!):

A) What is important in this chapter?

Who are the significant people, places and events?

B) How do the contents of this chapter reflect change and continuity from the earlier chapter on Sub-Saharan Africa? (Chapter 19)

C) How do the events in this chapter compare and contrast to the events in the chapter before (chapter 25), vis a vis the European interaction with indigenous Americans and residents of Oceania.

As you compile them, you should take the perspective that these presentations will be useful for review later on. Post the final product on your blog by Monday's class.

For homework, visit the other blogs. Use the links on the protopage to get there (http://www.protopage.com/twhittenburlington#Blog_posts/Class_Blogs ) Read pages 712-718 to finish the chapter. We will be moving on to China (chapter 27) starting on Monday.

That's it. Enjoy the weekend, and see you Monday.

Homework for March 8

For tonight, read pages 696-705, about Africa's political systems and interactions with Europe. There will be a quiz on chapter 25 (Beware! This quiz requires you to think and reason, not to memorize! Not everything will fit into the tidy boxes known as "chapters" in the book...) which will ask you to connect two terms and explain how one creates/fosters/leads to the other in 50 words or less.

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

Homework for March 7

Tonight, read pages 706-712.
You will have a quiz on chapter 25 (Europeans in Latin America and Oceania) on Friday. The quiz will take the form of connecting two statements in 50 words or less; how does one lead to or foster/create the other. There will be three of them, drawn from both the reading and the slideshows/class notes.

Homework for March 6

For tonight's assignment, first read the green boxed text about Nicotine on page 685. Then read pages 686-691 to complete the chapter. Tomorrow period 4 will take an abbreviated DBQ. (Try to contain your jealousy 1 & 2.)

Monday, March 5, 2012

Assignment for March 5

For tonight, read pages 665-675, which looks at the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs and Incas.

Period four, due to having a class meeting to talk about course registration tomorrow during the long block, you will be writing your DBQ on Wednesday; we will do a shortened version of the essay.

The powerpoint from today's class is below.

Over the weekend while the snow melts

First read pages 648-660. Lots o'information in these pages--names especially, so be sure to pay attention to who does what/thinks what/creates what/innovates what. Period 4 will see this in class, but periods 1 &2 should take a look at the selection from Adam Smith linked up here.

Second (and last) revisit your blog, and make a new post: Now what do you think Capitalism is all about? (what have you learned from doing the reading?)

Thursday, March 1, 2012

Homework for March 1

Tonight, please compose a blog post in which you do two things:
A) Explain why Christianity keeps splitting up into different forms
B) What do you know about Capitalism? What does the word mean? Please don't go to the dictionary, I'm interested in knowing what you know so we can talk about it in a more relevant way, so if you don't know what it is, that's fine! Just let me know in the post so I can adjust accordingly.

Oh, and just for fun, here's an article for you about studying: http://mashable.com/2012/02/29/facebook-homework-lower-grades-study/
