May Madness Scoring Guide Round Two

The next round's scoring guide is posted in Google Docs here.

The focus of the presentation is the legacy of the leader.  It will have a similar format in that there is a presentation first and a debate section second.  Lackeys may not score their leader and can be tapped in during the debate if the leader wishes.

May Madness Debate Format

Format for the Rounds

Round 1: Materials: None Allowed (no visuals, props or costumes)
Format: Each leader is allowed a 3 minute statement. Topic: Who are you and what were your greatest accomplishments? Following the statement, each may ask the other two questions.  The higher seed asks first, then lower seed asks, then higher, then lower. You have one minute to answer the questions and time will be called.

Round 2: Materials: Visual, Costume, Prop ALL OPTIONAL
Format: Each leader is allowed a 3 minute statement. Topic: What is your lasting legacy and what makes you a ruler worthy of this competition? Following the statement, each may ask the other two questions. The higher seed asks first, then lower seed asks, then higher, then lower. You have one minute to answer the question and time will be called.

Round 3: Materials: Visual required; Costume, Prop optional.
Format: Questions from the lackeys.   Your lackeys may ask you questions to demonstrate: what are your greatest strengths? Your opponent’s lackeys may ask you questions to elicit: what were your greatest mistake(s)? Each leader will be given 7 minutes for each topic.  During that time, your goal is to spend as much time on the positives.  Friendly lackeys will go first for both leaders, hostile lackeys make up the second round.  Lackeys will have to assume that they will have an uncooperative speaker during the hostile round.

Round 4: Materials: Visual, Prop required; costume, optional
Format: Questions from the Commissioner.  I will ask all manner of questions on all subjects, including hypothetical situations and how you would react to modern problems.  Stay in character!  The questioning will go for 10 minutes each, alternating leaders.  Leaders will then have 5 minutes to make a closing statement.

Round 5: (Finals): Materials: Visual, Costume, Prop ALL REQUIRED
Format: Jury Questions. Each leader will face a jury comprised of the final two defeated opponents for each class’ victor and special guests.  The jury member will have 1 minute to make a statement and ask a question of each finalist.  Then each finalist will have 2 minutes to explain why he/she is the GREATEST RULER OF ALL TIME.  Then the jury will vote by secret ballot to determine the winner.

*Note: You do not need to speak for the full time allotted.  That is a cap, not a minimum.
**Visuals, props and costumes are at your discretion. A costume could be a hat, a stick on mustache, or it could be a full outfit.  A visual could be a map, a picture, a poster, or a short video. It does have to be of your composition or significant modification! They must be presented within your time allotment.

You may have one 3x5 index card for notes for each debate.
You should be in character as your leader; however, NO VIOLENCE! And keep the language PG-13.

APWH Bibliography information

Your biography and your VoiceThread must be accompanied by a formal bibliography (you can combine them). You will use the Turabian style (seventh edition) to compose your bibliography

Turabian Structure
The Bibliography (in general)

·      Turabian style requires that there be a single space between lines within a bibliographic entry (or note) and a double space between a bibliographic entry (or note)
·      Arrange the items on your reference list alphabetically by author, interfiling books, articles, etc.  Some professors will want Web-based sources in a separate section.  I do not.
·      Indent the second and following lines 5 spaces.
·      There are no bullets or numbers preceding the entries.
·      If you are using a typewriter and cannot use italics, then use underlining. Otherwise, Italicize!
·      If no author is given, start with the title and then the date, and organize using the first portion of the entry. If a web page has no author, DON’T USE IT! EVER!
·      Websites: include the date the page was created (or updated) and the date you looked at it. Links change!

Places you can go for help:  . Georgetown University has a useful condensed version http://www.library.georgetown.edu/tutorials/research-guides/turabian-paren-guide or you can use the actual Turabian Style Manual 7th edition.

Ap World History May Madness information

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to May!  It's time for heated rivalries, Cinderella stories, and to crown a champion. It's time to separate the pretenders from the contenders… and THIS ISN’T ABOUT SPORTS! It's time for the 2nd Annual AP World History May Madness – The Quest for a Global Leader. The APWH Commissioner has scoured 10,000 years of history, traversing the entire globe in search of the best rulers of all time. It has come down to this:
51 Leaders, Only 1 Crown
The Tourney at a Glance
You will assume the role of one historical ruler or figure. You must fight, claw, and scratch your way through the brackets, in search of the crown. Each round consists of a leader debate, from which one leader will advance and one will go home. In a three-class showdown, one winner will emerge to seize the crown and claim the title, “Global Leader.”
Individual Responsibilities
  1. Write a biographical sketch of your historic ruler or leader. The biography must include the basic background of the person (Where, when, life events, etc.). More importantly, the biography must emphasize the significance of the person and his or her impact on the course of history.  It must include a bibliography of sources. It should be no longer than 3 pages typed double spaced.
  2. Email your biography to Mr. Whitten (twhittenburlington@gmail.com) by the end of class May 23rd. It will then be placed in a google doc for all to view. (or compose it in Google to start with and share it.)
  3. Create a VoiceThread as the leader promoting yourself.  You must have at least three images/videos as part of the VoiceThread.  This will be described separately, and will be due May 24th.
  4. Assume the role of your ruler in debate competitions, seeking to advance through the brackets. Sell yourself! Become the ruler! In the debate, you should emphasize your own attributes, but don't forget to attack the weaknesses of your opponent!
  5. Score the debates. Each member of the class will serve as an impartial jury member, voting for the winner of the debates that you are not in. Vote for the winner of the debate by balancing the effectiveness of the presentation with the documented merits of the rulers.
  6.  Debates will begin on May 25th and we will proceed through the rounds from there

AP World Review Sheet links

Review sheets can be found as Google Documents as listed below.

Review sheet #1

Review Sheet #2

Review Sheet #3

Review Sheet #4

Review Sheet #5

AP World History Review

We will be generating review sheets as a collaborative effort.  Review sheets are organized first into packets by chronology (so using the time periods of the AP) and secondarily into thematic content and regions of the globe.  The first set of sheets covers the period of time from 10,000 BCE-600 CE.  You should click the link here to access the first set of google documents.  In the groups that formed in class, go through and fill out the sheets with any relevant information pertaining to the regions as delineated.

So for example, you would include information about Confucianism in China if your theme is the development of religious/philosophical ideologies. This could include Confucius, Mencius, the 5 relationships, filial piety, etc.  Because it is electronic, you can be as detailed as you wish, or as brief as you wish.  Don't be cryptic! You can assume that the people looking at this have all taken the class, and so share a common basis of understanding, but your own shorthand won't help much.

All three sections are working on the same sheets, so read, add, edit, etc.  If you don't take responsibility for being accurate and complete, no one will, so be thorough and be sure!

There will be five sets of review sheets, and you will be responsible for the same themes for each time period. (So you will stick with Political Structures on all five).  I will consolidate links to all five sets in the next blog post.

The test is coming!

Tomorrow you have a test on Chapters 36, 37, 38, and 39. It will consist of 50 multiple choice questions.  You will have the full 45 minutes to complete it.
