AP World History the grand experiment #1.

For tonight, check out the powerpoint linked up HERE. The sound should start when you begin the slide show.  Click to move from slide to slide.  There is a sound icon that should allow you to hear the sound as well if it doesn't start up.  This is an experiment, but even if you can't hear the sound, the slides will still help you understand the Reformation and the Scientific Revolution.

On Thursday of this week we will have a test on chapters 19, 20, 21 and 22.  It will be multiple choice, no essay.

Ap World History heading into the break...

Today we wrote a DBQ in class about the plague...and a good time was had by all! (not)  For tonight, write up a short reflection on the DBQ--what was easy/hard? What do you think you did well/missed? Finish up any remaining facebook posts for your explorers for Friday as well--the pages should be complete by the start of class.

Over the vacation, you will be responsible for reading another book and composing a book report in the same format as the previous two.  The requirements are linked here.  Italy travelers there is an alternate assignment involving a presentation about your trip if you would rather not read a book while you are on the plane...

Note: When we come back from break, we will have a test on Chapters 19, 20, 21 and 22.  We will review for it on Wednesday, March 2, but will be covering new material on Monday and Tuesday that will not be on the test.

We are going to go faster when we get back...there are only 10 weeks left until the AP exam!

AP World and US China

Big Thanks to Sonia Rollins for coming in to talk with all of us about the Egyptian Revolution!  Some of you were asking for the links to the youtube videos.  The link to the song is here, and the Social Media Revolution video is here.
The facebook page she was referencing was We are all Kahled Said.

Keep watching the news!  Algeria has now pulled the plug on the internet, and protests are rising in Yemen and other Middle Eastern countries.

AP World Weekend

Over the weekend, you should finish your 10 posts to your explorer's facebook page.
You should also read the sections of Chapter 22 that pertain to the other explorers (Rabban Sauma, Ibn Battuta, Marco Polo and Zheng He) so you have a frame of reference for looking at their pages next week.
Lastly, finish drafting the DBQ essay topic that we started in class today.  We will be workshopping the drafts in class on Monday, and then writing one for real (and for a grade) on Thursday of next week.

US China--Democracy Wall

Over the weekend look up Wei Jingsheng online.  Who is he? Where is he now?  What did he do to get into trouble? What happened during the Democracy Wall movement? Read his Fifth Modernization essay, described at http://dir.salon.com/story/opinion/freedom/2003/07/15/modernization/ The actual essay is archived at http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/china/jingshen.html. Read chapter 5 in Mann.

AP World Facebook Explorer Project

Your assignment is to create a Facebook page for the explorer you were assigned in class.  Each member of the group is required to post 10 status updates as the explorer beginning with the date and your real initials.  All status updates must be completed by Monday, February 14th. The categories for assessment are linked up  here.  Today we have time in the Mac labs to build the page, but this will be the only time in class we have for research.  Tomorrow we will write a practice DBQ in class, and Monday we will workshop those essays.  So over the weekend, you are to finish reading chapter 22 (all the explorers) and make your posts.

AP World Oceania and the DBQ

Today we finished comparing and contrasting the Aztec and Incan societies.  We then went over the DBQ expectations for grouping of documents and reviewed the point of view of authors by looking at documents about Constantinople and Tenochtitlan.  Over the weekend, finish reading about the post-Classical societies of Oceania, pgs. 555 to 561. There will be a quiz coming next week on Chapter 21, in case you want to start studying...

US China relations

For tonight take a look at Chapter 1.  Pay attention to Nixon's lists.  Tomorrow we'll talk about whether or not he is setting himself up for a successful negotiation with the Chinese...which means we'll have to talk about negotiation in general...maybe help you get a cheaper price on a car...or get the car keys from your parents?

AP World History Americas and Oceania

We talked today about the Aztec society, religion and political set up.  Tonight read pages 549-555, and tomorrow we will have a comparative look at Incan society and present Oceania if time permits...

If you have a moment, you might also ponder the description of the Native peoples of North America...why are they different from their neighbors to the south?  We don't really talk about North America in this course, but the contrast is startling, and I'll bet few of you have heard of the Great Serpent Mound in Ohio...how did they do that with no ability to see it from above?
