In class, February 27

For today's class, you should first take the reading quiz that is linked up here. You should take no more than 15 minutes to answer the questions and submit the form.

Then, in the time you have remaining, use your iPad to compose a hierarchical flow chart of the social classes in both South America (Spanish and Portuguese) and North America. You should have a chart for each society that exists in the region.  Indicate which group had power and status, and, where relevant, indicate where/if gender played a role as well. You may use the book for this, but you can also test yourself to see what you remember from the reading by trying to do it without the book.  Since this was the major point of the reading, if you are drawing a blank, you need to think about how you are reading!

To do this you may use any of a number of apps, and you may choose which works best for you. InFlowChartLite will do the job quite nicely, as will old stand-bys ShowMe or Educreations, but you choose.  You must post an image of your chart (that is readable) to your blog.  Screenshot it if you must and crop out the unnecessary portions, or you can send it from the app to your camera role (inflowchart allows this if you first select all) or however the app allows it to happen.

For homework, go to the protopage that contains your blogs and look through what others have done.  Comment on ones you like, or give some constructive suggestions to others that don't work as well for you. Please don't send me an email asking me how many you should comment on, comment on the ones that you like/don't like.

Homework February 26

For tonight, you should read pages 675 (colonial society in the Americas) to page 686 (Stop at Europeans in the Pacific) Skip the Holy Herb Nicotine reading.  Then, post on your blog an explanation for the differences between the Political and Economic changes in Spanish and Portuguese colonies that we talked about in class today.

I have a meeting at BU tomorrow so won't be present for class.  Check back here for your assignment to complete during class time.

Happy Vacation!

Over the vacation you need to do the following:

1) Read pages 637-655 in the textbook.

I will be away for most of the vacation and not checking school email from Weds through Sunday, so plan accordingly if you need to ask me about a movie!

3) rest, have fun and relax!

See you in 10 days.

Homework for February 11

For tonight, write a review of the VoiceThread app for the app store.  Give it a star rating and explain why.  Be sure to include what it needs to be better.  Copy and paste the review onto your blog for a homework grade.

We will write a DBQ during your next long block.  If you want the practice, you can try to compose a DBQ using the plague documents and the model I showed you today.

Snow Day!

So, the Rules of a Blizzard clearly state in section 2, paragraph 4:

"In the eventeth of a snow day, all normal work that was dueth, shall be pushethed off to the next school day."

Projects to me on Monday.  If you would like to share the link ahead of time, feel free.

The good thing about being snowbound, though, is it gives you lots of time to read!  So continue on with the chapter, and read pages 606-617.  Should there be a quiz on Monday, and I'm not saying there will or there won't, it could cover both sets of reading.  Still only 5 or 6 questions, but from a bigger pool of pages.

Hope those heading to Spain made it out safely.  Bummer that you will miss a snow day though.  Yeah.  Feel reaaaallllly sorry for you all...

Help your parents shovel!

In class February 7

Sorry to not be with you today.  While I'm out I'd like you to do a little work practicing the DBQ essay.  There is a question and supporting documents about the plague that the sub can give to each of you. You may work together to do this. You should then write answers to the following questions.  You can do this by hand, and you can even do most of it in the packet itself. (or you can use a separate sheet of paper if you prefer.)

First, read the question. What are you being asked to do?

Second, read the information about the authors of each of the document.  What presents itself as possible groupings that would help you answer the question based just on that information?  Write down three possibilities.

Third, read the documents. Are there other possible groups of documents you can make that would help you answer the question better?

Fourth, select your final three groups that you will work with.  Remember, they have to support the answer to the question.

Fifth, identify what is missing.  Based on your groups and the question, what would be a useful type of document to have to answer your question? Why is this type of document useful?

Sixth you need a thesis statement.  Write it down.

Seventh, you need to provide a written demonstration of your understanding of each document that is not longer than one sentence.

Eighth you need to explain the point of view of at least two authors of the documents.  Why do they write what they write?

That's probably enough for this period.  We'll talk about the process in class on Friday.

For homework tonight, you should read pages 597-606. In the event that we don't have school Friday due to weather, check back here to see the assignment over the weekend. (sorry, but we don't have the luxury of time to lose the weekend!)

Homework for February 6

For tonight, continue to work on your VoiceThread project.

Read the un-numbered essay (pages 594-595) describing the era to come.

On your blog, write about two things:

1) Why is there a myth about Christopher Columbus, and why do we have a holiday for him?
2) Reflect on the contents of the essay.  What will be new/change about the path of history in this coming era?  What do you think will continue/stay the same?

You can write these as separate posts, or you can combine them, whichever you choose.

The Columbus Presentation is below:

homework for February 5

For tonight, please read pages 582-591 (finishing the chapter).  You will have time in class tomorrow to work on the VoiceThread project.  Some people are finding the desktop/on-line version to work with easier than the app, so if you are having trouble with the iPad, give it a whirl on a laptop/computer!

Homework February 4

For tonight, you are to read pages 576-582 and continue to work on the VoiceThread project.

I'll post answers to the quiz when everyone has taken it!

Homework for february 1

Over Groundhog Day weekend, you should read pages 566-576 (some of it you've read before, and of course, there are the two pages that are maps, so it's not as much as you think.) You should also work on your Explorer's VoiceThread projects. The rubric for the project is attached here.

Then do it again, and again, and again, until you get it right...
