Try Number two for the slideshow

Slideshare seems to have converted the keynote successfully, so try this instead...

Nationalism and Industrial Revolution slides

It seems to think it is a video, so I'm not sure it will work...
Tonight, you should read The Communist Manifesto that was shared with you in class today. You can also download the unabridged version from iBooks if you like, which will allow you to access the features of iBooks that might make it better for you.

I also shared a document about reading the CM with you that contains several vocabulary terms that will help you to understand the content better. You do not need to write down the vocabulary terms, they are there for pre-reading purposes--look them up first, then read...

Your task is to post on your blog 4 constructive/positive things and 4 destructive/negative things that Marx and Engels highlight.  Pay extra attention to the actual manifesto part of it all; that's the list of 10 demands they make at the end...

And remember, this was to be read by the factory workers to inspire them to revolt against the Bourgeoisie...

Homework for April 3

Tonight, read pages 825-833, stop when you get to "Socialist Challenge." It's really important that you grasp and retain the impact that the Industrial Revolution has on all aspects of human society, so do what you need to do to hold onto the contents of these pages...

The -isms are going to grow over the next couple of days, so you also want to get a way to keep them all clear--maybe a chart, maybe a list, maybe flashcards...you must understand the differences between the economic theories that are floating around. Thus far we've done Capitalism and Mercantilism.

Homework for April 2

Tonight, take a look again at the presentation on the liberator hero that was shared with you via email earlier in the day. If you like, you can use the link here to access the presentation.

Examine each of the paintings, and compose a blog post in which you do the following:

Note similarities between the portrayals. What do they have in common? Why do they have these things in common?

Then: Why do the artists portray these figures in this way? What does this accomplish in terms of future generations regarding these men?

Then: Why do these revolutions need to have heroic figures? What is heroic about them--is it their actions, their persons, or their ideals that the artist is celebrating?

Homework for the weekend. Happy April fools day!

You are lucky you aren't in school for that...

For the weekend, read pages 791-805. Pay special attention to how the revolution and aftermath in France compares to the revolutions and aftermath in Haiti and the Bolivarian revolutions in Latin America.

Then, if you are in the mood to watch something that will bend your brain, check out the TED talk linked up here. The title of it is Questions No One Knows the Answers To. It is only 12 minutes long and it actually doesn't have anything to do with history....it just makes you think about what you don't know, which is good every now and again...

March 29th assignment

For tonight, you are to watch the TED talk given by Niall Ferguson on the 6 killer apps.

http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/niall_ferguson_the_6_killer_apps_of_prosperity.html

Then write your own response on your blog to what he has to say. Do you agree? Disagree? have an alternative? You could tweet it to him too at @nfergus if you like...see if he replies!
